A modern redesign concept for India's existing RTI Online portal
01 // OVERVIEW
RTI ROCKZ is a new-look makeover concept for the existing rtionline.gov.in portal. It is not a brand-new RTI website or service; it reimagines the visual language, layout, and interaction design of the established portal while preserving its core civic purpose. The concept refreshes the filing wizard, First Appeal workflows, public-authority directory, bilingual content, downloadable acknowledgments, and PIO administration experience.
02 // THE PROBLEM
The existing rtionline.gov.in experience could benefit from a clearer visual hierarchy and a more approachable interface for citizens who must interpret legal procedures, identify the correct public authority, understand statutory deadlines, and track applications. This makeover addresses those presentation and usability gaps without replacing the existing service: it gives the familiar portal a modern visual system, clearer grouping, and more guided interactions while keeping public educational resources available without authentication.
03 // THE BUILD
Implemented as a focused frontend makeover with Next.js 15, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS, the concept refreshes the existing portal experience rather than launching a separate service. The work gives the established routes and components a new visual treatment and stronger interaction patterns, including signed JWT authentication stored in httpOnly SameSite cookies, protected citizen routes, a clearer multi-step filing context, a First Appeal flow, bilingual English/Hindi translation state, and a client-side jsPDF acknowledgment generator. It also modernizes the existing department matcher over a 2,900+ entry public-authority dataset, the 21-guideline accordion system, the statutory flowchart, BPL fee-waiver handling, and the PIO status workflow.
04 // ARCHITECTURE
Public informational pages remain accessible without authentication, while filing, appeals, history, status acknowledgments, and PDF downloads are protected by the authentication context and signed JWT cookie utilities. Citizen form state is managed through a dedicated filing context, language state through a site-wide language context, department discovery through normalized scored search, and PIO operations through an isolated database-service abstraction that can later be replaced by a persistent backend.
05 // CHALLENGES
The main challenge was coordinating legal-process complexity with a simple user experience. The system had to represent multiple filing branches, transfers, first appeals, statutory day limits, BPL exemptions, payment guidance, and department matching without overwhelming the citizen. This was addressed through an interactive stepper, progressive disclosure, reusable form components, explicit validation states, and a separation between public guidance and authenticated workflows.
06 // RESULTS
The result is a polished new-look concept for rtionline.gov.in: a more accessible visual layer over the existing RTI service experience. The makeover makes the journey from learning how RTI works to filing an application, generating an acknowledgment, monitoring status, and escalating through a First Appeal easier to understand and navigate, while retaining the portal's original service structure.
07 // LESSONS
This makeover strengthened understanding of working within an existing product, improving an established information architecture without breaking its core workflows, and translating complex policy into calm, accessible interface decisions. It also deepened experience with secure cookie-based authentication, multi-context state management, bilingual product architecture, searchable government datasets, PDF generation, and statutory workflow modeling.
